BBC: Probe Exposes ID Trade Fraud

BBC: Probe Exposes ID Trade Fraud

The BBC reported on Wednesday 28th May that it had successfully applied for a fake driver's licence in the name of the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith. Please click here to see the full story.

It had used www.confidentialaccess.com - just one of many websites available to users to buy false documents for "novelty or amusement" purposes. GB has long campaigned for the need for businesses to use more robust means of authenticating people's identity other than relying on traditional, paper documents. While the Home Secretary's licence may have looked genuine, we passed a picture of it to one of our own fraud experts; he immediately identified it as fraudulent. But we need to take the human out of the process all together and when we ran the licence details through URU™, unsurprisingly; it failed at the first level.

So, good news for all URU users and, I guess, for the Home Secretary. But not enough businesses are using the more robust methods and technologies available to authenticate identity. It is simply no longer viable to rely on the old school view of identity as defined by a driver's licence or passport.  At GB we are constantly innovating our products and services to take the widest possible view of identity. We offer our clients the ability to tailor their ID verification processes to take advantage of all the different data options available, not just documentary evidence.
